Did these suck or not? I seem to remember them having the M62 V8, but either this one or the V12 model was horribly shitty and unreliable. I don’t really like BMWs at all, but I’d be down with an 8 Series or anything made before 1990.
Also NPOCP, it’s $9,000

V12 was unbelievably great... until it broke and required you to take a second mortage to fix it.
V8 are greats, but the little things tend to break (electronic, most notably).
9K$ seems a little high... but it has a phone. that’s worth a lot in 90’s street cred.

Didn’t it have two entirely separate ECUs or something?

I want this. I owned a 740iL with the M60. Research states that ‘95s like this one could have had either the 4.0L M60 or 4.4L M62. I prefer the M60 because it was a bit more analog. Nothing ever went wrong with mine for 20,000 miles and regular oil/filter changes.
Edit: Also, ditto on what Twism said. The V12 is great, until something goes wrong. For example, in the repair manual, to replace the starter on my 740iL with the M60, it takes 9 steps (less than the inline 6!) The V12 in the 750iL takes
Thirty
Five
Steps.

That was the V12. It was basically two straight 6s joined together with an ECU for each bank.

Yeah, two Bosch Motronic; one for each bank of cylinders.
BMW builds great L6, so they figured why not simply take two of them, fuse them and make a V12?
The engine was named Engine Of The Year when it launched, but then reliability issues kicked in.

I remember they were criticized for being heavy GT cars instead of nimble sports cars, and I know they are complex (the 12 more so than the 8) and maintenance can be expensive. I also know they are beautiful and I want one.

Fuck it, they’re GT cars not low slung German sports cars.
They’re really nice looking cars though, it’s too bad they’re unreliable.

The 840s are lighter, aluminum block v8 instead of iron block v12, and have a much simpler computer system because they aren't two straigh sixes stuck together still basically running separate management. Seems like a reasonable price, and as far as I know the same rules apply to them as all older bmws. If it's been well taken care of, the maintenance should be fairly predictable. However if it's been sitting, or had an owner than didn't maintain it, it'll be lots of catching up

That’s why I’m not too sure about this one, it has pretty low mileage on it so I’m guessing a few of the expensive things are yet to have been completed on it since it most likely wasn’t daily driven.

The 840 Ci would be a V8 I think. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe it was the 850Ci and 850CSi that were the V12s. The 850CSi M package being not only the most desirable, but also the rarest and most powerful.
There were two different V12s, one made a respectable 370hp, the other made an abysmal 240 (roughly). As has been said, the BMW V12s were/are horrifically unreliable. I know someone with the weaker 850Ci, and it’s a dog. Oil leaks, tons of problems, there’s a lot of talk about swapping it to a V8. I personally wouldn’t but I do understand from a cost perspective.
There’s just something about a V12. I mean, look who’s talking, I’ve got the SL600 Sport, the 850CSi M’s indirect competition (the 850CSi V12 was not around when the SL600 Sport was made, but there was a base SL600 made during the same time). The big difference between the two engines is that the Benz has proven to be among the most reliable engines they’ve ever made while the BMW V12 has proved to be one of the least reliable. The V8 model is actually pretty reliable considering the era for BMW not exactly being the best for their engineers.
I’ve seen several 840s and 850s, many of them badged wrong, you’ve got to have the best right, just don’t pop the hood? Whatever. The M120 engine is much like the BMW, it’s a pair of I6 motors smashed together, separate distributors, separate fuel pumps, separate computers...it’s a complicated mess. My 97 SL got lucky because it’s an updated model with better computer control and overall slightly better reliability. With 105k miles it’s showing it’s age, but it’s not in disrepair, just getting older. As someone said today “it’ll pass anything but the gas station.” Well, depends on how you drive it. I stay out of it and treat it nicely, so I get 18mpg average, no idea what the BMWs get, I’ve never had a chance to ask that question.
All that said, the early 90’s 8 series cars like that, right up there with the 90’s SL class. They’re just in a league of their own, doesn’t matter what engine they have under the hood.

Definitely worth looking into. Hopefully they have service records, and maybe check if bimmerforums has a buyers guide for E31s. They're often comprehensive

Wait, really? All I’ve heard was that the BMW V12 was another great V12 engine, that they were very strong. It’s just that maintenance is a complete pocket drainer. One problem I’ve heard of are those ECUs - because they’re positioned near the windscreen, any water leaks have catastrophic effect on them.

There was the M70 and S70 motors. The M70 was the weaker, far less performance model. The S70 was put in the 850CSi M. Bigger, more power, but not exactly more reliable.
BMW and V12 shouldn’t really ever be put into the same sentence, especially on a used car lot. They’re really complicated, somewhat antiquated, and top out around 370hp. The Benz M120 started at 389, and when pushed to it’s maximum (7.3L) was rated for 525hp. Not only that, but the M120 was one of the most reliable engines, having the lowest number of warranty claims per units built.
The 850 line of cars look gorgeous, but holy hell those suckers are terribly expensive to keep on the road today. I would even avoid the 7 series with that V12 like the plague.
If you want an E31 8 series, get a V8. You’ll have a better shot at driving it more than seeing it sit in a shop.
